Julia Alvarez, Famous Poet and Novelist Paper Julia Alvarez is a famous world-wide poet and novelist. She was raised in the Dominican Republic, which is why most of her poems and novels are written in Spanish. One of her most famous novels is called In the time of the Butterflies, which is based on her flee to the United States, from the underground, where the three Mirabel sisters were murdered. The hardships of coming into the country, and without knowing the language is what is said to be the main reason of why she began to start writing. Julia Alvarez is more of a famous author than a poet. Therefore, she doesn’t have very many poetry books, or poems put on the internet. I did find five poems that stuck out to me more than her other ones, though. The first poem is called â€Å"Household Riddle†. I despise poetry, but this poem actually got my attention as I was reading it, unlike many other poems. I think this poem is funny because it is mostly talking about the riddle, â€Å"Which came first, the chicken or the egg? † which is a funny little riddle that everyone knows. The second poem that I found is called â€Å"Hairwashing†. This poem is about how her mother used to wash her hair when ever she misbehaved, to rinse out all of the bad. Another poem that I’ve chosen, which is my personal favorite, is called â€Å"Against Cinderella†. This poem kind of analyzes the story of Cinderella, and it asks questions that it knows we’ve all been thinking all of these years. One line in the poem says, â€Å"I can’t believe only one woman in that town had that size foot, could fit into that shoe. † We all know we’ve wondered this too, but we just always went along with it. I like this poem; it’s cute and funny, and in a way sarcastic. The last two poems I chose are called â€Å"Dusting† and â€Å"Storm Windows†. The main reason I chose to do these poems is because they were short, and they were one of the very few poems I could find written by Julia Alvarez. I do kind of like the poem â€Å"Dusting† because the main character says she likes to write her name on the dusty cabinet every morning, and I remember I used to like to write my name in the dust when I was little, too. I, personally, don’t really like her poetry, and she must have not even have written that many poems because I can barely find anything on her. Pressure Transducer Essay Pressure Transducer Essay Measuring Control Valve Noise By: Nathan Kotz, Sean Newton and Jimmy Greco 11/30/10 Executive Summary: We are designing a system to measure the pressure, temperature and vibration in a sealed control valve. Our final design will have an accelerometer being held on by a powerful magnet and the temperature and pressure gages will be screwed into the pipe. The final system will meet all of these requirements but we will have to keep the pressure in the pipe below 500 psi in order for our pressure sensor to read properly. We must also keep the frequency in the pipe below 10000 Hertz otherwise our accelerometer will not read correctly. Overall our goals are met but if we are going to deal with higher frequencies we would need to go with the other accelerometers to measure up to and over 20000 Hertz. Objectives: Our group is trying to measure the sound created by the flow through a control valve in an extremely noise sensitive environment. The line we are testing is being used for air flow and we are asked to measure a few different quantities. First we have to measure the internal static pressure upstream and downstream of the valve, second we must find the pipe wall vibration at two different locations upstream and downstream of the valve and lastly our group has to take the temperature downstream of the valve. The static and dynamic pressures need to be measured inside the pipe and the specifications that need to be met are shown in table 1 and figure 1A. Figure 1A. Measurement System Design: Our group first started looking for pressure sensors that were in the 0-400 psi range and we were unable to find any that would meet our resolution requirement. So we decided to go with the PCB Piezotronics Model PX309. This made the most sense because it had the closest range to our specified values and the resolution was the lowest. It was the second most expensive pressure sensor that our group researched but it wasn’t much more expensive than the 119B model. The next items that our group researched were the temperature gages that had to be able to measure between -20 and 100 degrees Celsius. The gages also needed to have a resolution of 0.1 degrees Celsius. All of the gages met the range specification but the best model was the omega TH-44007-40-T because of its low cost. This model met all the specs and was cheaper than the other two. Lastly our group looked at a couple of accelerometers to measure the vibration in the pipe wall. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines bullying as psychiatric disorder that is characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behaviour in which either the basic rights of the victim is violated. The phenomenon of bullying is characterised by three major aspects: (1) An aggressive behaviour or intentional behaviour to bring harm (2) It is carried out repeatedly and over time, (3) the inter-personal relationship is characterized by an imbalan ce of power.Often bullying is found to happen without any apparent provocation. Hence bullying can be considered as a form of abuse. This is mainly at a peer level and can be termed as a peer abuse. The Prevalence of Bullying Bullying among the children is found to typically occur at school or during their way to the school. As children do not have an option of changing the environment by not being in the school, most of them are unable to avoid bullying.A study conducted by US Department of Education and Justice in 1999 indicated that almost 1 million students (4%) who are aged between 12 and 18 years reported fear of being attacked or harmed in the school vicinity. About 5% reported that they avoided one or more places in the school wile 13% reported that they were targets of language of hate. The National Threat Assessment Center found that more than two thirds of the attackers involved in 37 shootings did the attack for taking revenge for incidents in their lives when they felt persecuted, bullied, threatened, attacked or injured by others.It was found that exposure to bullying at school played a major role in motivating most of the perpetrators to take up violence. (AMA, 2002) Studies conducted by Olweus in Norway and Sweden with 150,000 students who are from grades one to nine indicated that 15% of the students reported of being involved in bully or victim problems several times within a three to five month period. About 9 percentage of the students reported that they had been bullied by their peers several times and about 7 percentage of the students indicated that they bullied others.About 2 percentage of students reported that they were bullied as well as they bullied other students. Studies in Europe and United States have indicated higher level of bullying among the children and the youth. In a study that involved 6,500 students who are between the 4th grade and the 6th grade in South Carolina, about 23 percentage of the students reported of being b ullied several times during the three months and 9 percent reported of being victim of very frequent bullying, which was qualified as once a week or more.About one in five reported that they bully other students several times during the period of the study. A study conducted by Nansel with representation of about 15,600 students from 6th to 10th grades provided similar results. Seventeen percent of the students studied indicated that they bullied sometimes during the school term and 19 percent reported bullying others more often. Six percent of the full sample reported both bullying and having been bullied.Many studied have found that the rates of bullying decrease steadily through the elementary grades such as the study conducted by Melton, Nansel shows. A study conducted by Olweus on about 10,000 Norwegian studies indicated that the rates of victimisation were twice as high among the 4th grade students when compared to the 10th grade.
